The shop’s red exterior and traditional curtain make it easy to spot, and many tourists stop by as soon as they arrive.
As you walk along the street, you’ll notice the irresistible aroma of freshly baked mentai bread filling the air. It’s almost impossible to walk past without feeling tempted!

The most popular item at YAMAYA BASE DAZAIFU is their Mentai French Bread (500 yen).

Although there was a line when I visited on a Sunday afternoon, the staff worked quickly and efficiently, so the wait wasn’t too long.

This stamp reads “合格” (Gōkaku), meaning “Pass the exam”, and is inspired by Dazaifu Tenmangu, a famous shrine for academic success.
On my visit, the staff told me that only around 100 breads per day are stamped — but luckily, the one I ordered had it! 🌸
It’s not only a meaningful snack for students preparing for exams, but also a very photogenic souvenir for travelers.
