Hello, I’m Sachi.
If you’re visiting Dazaifu, one local specialty you should never miss is mentaiko — Fukuoka’s famous spicy cod roe.
Along the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, you’ll find many street food stalls, but one spot that always draws a crowd is YAMAYA BASE DAZAIFU, run by the legendary mentaiko brand YAMAYA.

Their most popular item, Mentai French Bread, is a warm, freshly baked baguette generously filled with rich mentaiko sauce. Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, it’s the perfect snack to enjoy while exploring the shrine.

What makes it even more special is the “Good Luck” stamp burned onto the bread — a symbol connected to academic success at Dazaifu Tenmangu.
In this article, I’ll show you why this famous Dazaifu street food is loved by both tourists and locals.

Although there was a line when I visited on a Sunday afternoon, the staff worked quickly and efficiently, so the wait wasn’t too long.
One great point is that you receive your bread fresh off the grill — which makes it even more delicious.

This stamp reads “合格” (Gōkaku), meaning Pass the exam, and is inspired by Dazaifu Tenmangu, a famous shrine for academic success.

On my visit, the staff told me that only around 100 breads per day are stamped — but luckily, the one I ordered had it! 🌸

It’s not only a meaningful snack for students preparing for exams, but also a very photogenic souvenir for travelers.

Next to the bread counter, you’ll find a souvenir section filled with YAMAYA’s mentaiko products.
