Peak bloom has officially arrived at Dazaifu Tenmangu.
On February 23, 2026, the shrine was wrapped in soft shades of pink and white as plum blossoms reached their most balanced and beautiful moment of the season.
While not every one of the shrine’s 200 varieties blooms at the same time, the combination of fading early blossoms and fully opened mid-season trees clearly signals peak season.
Because February 23 was a national holiday in Japan, the shrine was extremely crowded — yet the beauty of the plum blossoms more than justified the visit.
With rain forecast starting February 24, this moment may mark the turning point of the 2026 season.

Tobiume Plum Tree at Dazaifu Tenmangu in Peak Bloom (February 23, 2026)

Tobiume Plum Tree Beside the Main Hall – February 23, 2026
The sacred Tobiume plum tree, standing beside the main hall, was in magnificent bloom.
Compared to February 11, the number of open flowers has clearly increased.
The branches are now filled with blossoms, creating a powerful yet elegant presence.
This tree alone symbolizes why Dazaifu Tenmangu is considered Japan’s most important plum blossom shrine.
The petals looked fresh and vibrant — a true sign of peak bloom.
Higashi Shinen Garden Plum Blossoms at Dazaifu Tenmangu – February 2026 Update

Plum Blossom Tunnel in Higashi Shinen Garden
Higashi Shinen felt like walking through a tunnel of plum blossoms.
The density of flowers has increased since February 20, and the pathway is now framed in white on both sides.
When sunlight filters through the branches, the entire area glows gently.

This is currently one of the most photogenic areas of the shrine.
Kita Shinen Plum Blossom Bloom Status at Dazaifu Tenmangu (Peak Season 2026)

Kita Shinen Garden in Full Seasonal Balance
Kita Shinen shows the clearest example of peak season balance.
While some early-blooming trees are beginning to lose petals, many mid- and late-bloom varieties are now fully open.
Because Dazaifu Tenmangu has over 200 varieties of plum trees, it is impossible for every tree to bloom at once.
Peak bloom here does not mean 100% simultaneous flowering.
Instead, it means the overall scenery is at its most harmonious and abundant stage — and that is exactly what February 23 felt like.

Weeping Plum on Feb 11 vs Feb 23 – Petals Beginning to Fall
The weeping plum tree that was in full bloom on February 11 is now about half scattered. Petals gently cover the ground beneath it.
If you would like to see how the early bloom looked at that time, you can read our detailed February 11 early bloom report at Dazaifu Tenmangu, where the weeping plum was at full strength.
This fading of early varieties is one of the clearest indicators of peak season at Dazaifu.

Weeping Plum from Feb 20 – Still Beautiful on Feb 23
Meanwhile, the weeping plum that reached full bloom on February 20 remains largely unchanged.
Our February 20 plum blossom bloom status update documented the rapid progress toward peak season, showing how quickly the trees were opening across the shrine.
It is still beautifully open, adding depth and richness to the overall landscape.
When early blossoms begin to fade while others remain fully open, it signals the true peak moment of the season.
Kyokusui Garden Plum Blossoms Before the March 1 Festival at Dazaifu Tenmangu

PlumBlossoms at the Kyokusui Garden – Event Site for March 1
The garden where the Kyokusui no En ceremony will be held on March 1 is also in good condition.
The plum trees surrounding the flowing stream are blooming beautifully, creating a traditional and poetic atmosphere.
If weather conditions remain stable, the ceremony should still be framed by blossoms.
However, rain is forecast for the coming week.
Some petals may begin to fall, especially from the early varieties.
February 23 National Holiday Crowds at Dazaifu Tenmangu (Peak Bloom Day)

Crowded Approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu on National Holiday
Because February 23 was a national holiday, the approach street to the shrine was packed with visitors.

Long Line in Front of the Temporary Hall
There was also a long line forming in front of the temporary hall for worship.
Despite the heavy crowds, the shrine grounds are spacious enough that it is still possible to enjoy the plum blossoms and take photographs — especially in garden areas slightly away from the main hall.
If you prefer fewer people, weekday mornings are strongly recommended.
Rain Forecast After February 24 – Will Dazaifu Plum Blossoms Last?
Weather forecasts predict rain starting February 24 and continuing through much of the week.
Rain may accelerate petal fall, particularly for early-bloom varieties that are already beginning to fade.
However, later-blooming trees may continue to open, meaning the scenery will gradually shift rather than disappear.
As of February 23, this is the most beautiful and balanced moment of the 2026 plum blossom season at Dazaifu Tenmangu.
If you are currently in Kyushu, this is the time to visit.
